Abingdon, VA – William A. “W.A.” Roberts, Jr., age 93, passed on Sunday, November 27, 2016, at his home. W.A. was born in McDowell County, WV and lived most of his life in Buchanan County, VA before moving to Abingdon in 1979. Mr. Roberts was a U.S. Army Veteran and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart during his service during WWII at the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the U.M.W.A. and retired from the coal industry as an electrician. Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his parents, William Ance Roberts and Mae Dales Roberts, and half-sister, Virginia Roberts Ramey.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Peggy McReynolds Roberts; daughter, Barbara Lawson and husband Bill Latham of Abingdon, VA; two sons, Bill Roberts of Abingdon, VA and Michael Roberts of New York, New York; and granddaughter, Rachel Waddell of Gray, TN.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Pastor Stephen Musick officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia Army National Guard. There will be no visitation prior to the service.
