William Bertram “Bert” Campbell
April 1, 1964 - August 18, 2022

Bert Campbell passed away August 18, 2022, in Abingdon, Virginia. Bert was born and raised in Russell County, Virginia, and graduated high school a Lebanon Pioneer. While he spent most of his life in Virginia and Tennessee, Bert traveled the country trucking freight and cattle. His biggest passion was working with cattle and horses. When not on the road or working, this passion spilled over into rescuing many of God’s creatures, including dogs, cats, and even squirrels. His home was often filled with meowing and barking. He was always one to help a friend and often showed his affection by sharing his cooking–from steaks and chili to apple turnovers and molasses cookies.

Bert was preceded in death by his father, Joe Gratton Campbell. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his mother, Patricia “Pat” Campbell; his daughters, Maggie Campbell and Emma Morton (Tanner); his granddaughter, Kennedy Morton; his sister and brother, Debbie Jessee (David) and Joe Campbell; longtime partner and her daughter, Karen and Anna Harlan; and beloved nieces, great-nephews, cousins, family and friends.

Some of his family’s favorite memories: working alongside him on the farm (cousin Scott); the fact that he could charm a squirrel out of tree if he felt like it (Joe); watching him meet and hold his first grand baby, Kennedy, for the first time (Emma); teaching Maggie how to drive a truck in reverse saying,“If you can drive backwards without hitting anything, going forward is not an issue”(Maggie).

We take comfort that he is now at peace and reunited with his father, Papa Joe. A small family memorial and scattering of his ashes will take place at a later date this Fall. In lieu of flowers, Bert’s family asks you to honor his memory by making a donation to Highlands Community Services in his name, highlandscsb.org/donate/, or helping his daughter’s with the unexpected costs by visiting https://gofund.me/ba56a5c0.

The family is being cared for by Farris Funeral Service and Crematory, 427 E. Main St., Abingdon, VA 24210 (276-623-2700). You may leave messages of condolence at www.farrisfuneralservice.com/
