Abingdon, VA.-
William “Bill” (Nu-Nu) Thomas Blevins, Jr., age 96, passed away at his home on Wednesday, March 21, 2018. Bill was employed by Piggly Wiggly in Abingdon as a master butcher. He later moved to Baltimore, MD, and worked for Safeway Stores. In 1991, he and his wife, Cletus, returned to Abingdon. Bill was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, and served in the Pacific Theater. He attained the rank of Private First Class and he served with Company E of the 149th Infantry Regiment. He continued his service by being an active member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He attended Pleasant View United Methodist Church. His family remembers him as being the one who brought laughter into a room. However, most of all, he was known as being kind, compassionate and larger than life.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, William Thomas and Lucy Hess Blevins; his wife, Cletus Terry Blevins; son Warren Terry Blevins; brothers, Gilbert and Richard Blevins; sisters, Hazel Hodge, Nannie Snead, Lorine Castle, Etta Millsap, Katherine Thomas, and Millie Hilt.
He is survived by his son, William Cotton “Connie” Blevins of Rising Sun, Md., grandchildren Warren Aaron Blevins and Kimberly Patterson; great grandchildren, Marty Arrieta, Julie Patterson, Amanda Brooke Blevins, and Marissa Dawn Moran Blevins; sisters Frances Turley and, Jean Price and husband Ralph, both of Abingdon; and a host of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 7:00 PM, on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Barbara Farmer and Bill Blevins officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the funeral home prior to the service. Interment services will be held at Noon, on Sunday, March 25, 2108 at Knollkreg Memorial Park, where casket bearers will be Tommy Castle, Stephen Thomas, Evan Gillam, Kevin Turley, Eric Bowles, Aaron Blevins, and James Millsap. The Virginia National Guard and the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard will provide Military Rites. The family will fellowship at Washington Chapel Church, located on Walden Road at 1:00 PM after the service.
The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Wayne Thomas, Caris Hospice and nursing caregivers for the love and care shown during Bill’s illness.
