Abingdon, VA – William E. Canter, age 88, passed on Monday, December 12, 2016, at Johnston Memorial Hospital after a two year battle with cancer. Ed was a U.S. Army Veteran having served in the Korean War and loved to garden and fish. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Fannie Lee Canter, and brother, Odell Canter.
Ed is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ellen Taylor Canter; daughter, Katherine Widener; special foster son, Tommy Taylor; eight additional foster children; three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, December 15, 2016, at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Damascus, VA with Pastor Mike Dixon officiating. Pallbearers will be Michael Wayne Taylor, J.C. Taylor, Michael Smith, Russell Scott, Austin Spiva, and Harold Huyler. Honorary pallbearers will be Jackie Taylor, Ron Roberts, and Hoil Houck. Military Rites will be conducted by Patton-Crosswhite V.F.W. Post # 6975 and the Virginia Army National Guard.
