William Glenn Widner, age 76, passed on Sunday, June 23, 2013, at his home. William retired after 24 years of service from the United States Army where he served two tours of duty in Korea and one tour in Vietnam. He was a member of Carvossa United Methodist Church and was a 32nd Degree Mason. William is preceded in death by his parents, John Henry and Cora Lee Phillips Widner; brothers, Benny and Andrew Widner; and sister, Martha Able.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley McCormick Widner; son, Larry Widner of Abingdon, VA; daughters, Rhonda Widner of Abingdon, VA and Thresia Newbury of Jonesborough, TN; brothers, Allen Widner of Abingdon, VA and J.W. (Helen) Widner of Abingdon, VA; sisters, Mary Kaylor of Meadowview, VA, Vivian (Vernon) Hutton of Bristol, VA, Linda Sue Widner of Bristol, VA, and Hattie Pickle of Morristown, TN; grandchildren, Jessica (Tim) Cannon and Courtney (Michael) White; great-grandchildren, Sarah and Haylee Cannon and Liam White; and good buddy, Dale Clements.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at Carvossa United Methodist Church, 19429 Rustic Lane, Abingdon, VA, with Reverend Leonard Smith officiating. Visitation with the family will be held from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Tuesday prior to the service at the church.
A graveside committal service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Mike Kaylor, Roger Kaylor, Jackie Akers, Dale Clements, Dick Duncan, and Tommy Eleam serving as pallbearers. Military Honors will be conducted by the Virginia National Guard and Highlands Veterans Honor Guard. Those wishing to travel in procession to the cemetery are asked to meet at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service by 1:30 P.M. Wednesday.
