William Robert Hagy

William Robert Hagy (Bob), age 83, of Abingdon, VA passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at his home.

Bob was born on August 8, 1941, in Deskins, VA. He was the son of the late Don and Victoria Looney Hagy. He was a 1962 graduate of Grundy Senior High School. Bob was a proud veteran of the United States Army. He worked at General Motors, Buick plant in Flint, Michigan for 32 years. One of Bob’s great passions was flying. He earned his pilots license and owned a small plane while in Michigan. He had many adventures flying family and friends around. Bob loved and excelled in most sports. He was an avid golfer, high school football star, and he very seldom got beat playing ping-pong!

 After retirement Bob moved back to his boyhood home, Abingdon, VA. He was very active in his community, serving with Meals on Wheels. He also happily served at the food pantry at Highlands Fellowship Church for many years. Bob traveled many miles over the years to watch his beloved grandchildren’s sporting events.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Henry, Frank and Kenneth Hagy and Vernon Church.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Judy Lester Hagy; daughter, Michelle Vanderkwaak and husband, Tim of Asheville, NC; son, William Todd Hagy and wife, Dana of Greenville SC; sisters, Joyce Morris and husband, Charlie of Hazard KY; Betty Alcantar and husband, Jesse of San Antonio, TX; brother, Dennis Hagy and wife, Kathy of White Haven, PA; grandchildren, Emily Howard and husband Tyler of Fletcher, NC; Katy Vanderkwaak of Hilton Head, SC; Julianne Vanderkwaak of Charlotte, NC; Ben Vanderkwaak and wife, Chloe of Richmond, VA; Zane Hagy of Greenville, SC; two great-grandchildren, Addison Howard and Alden Howard of Fletcher, NC; special friends, Jerry Keene, David Jackson, Joe Cabaniss; brothers-in-law, Tom and Dwight Lester and Shorty Ratliff; several nieces and nephews and many friends and extended family that will miss him.

Military honors will be conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and Army National Guard Honor Guard beginning at 2:00 pm on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at the Country Tent of Highlands Fellowship Church, 22417 Watauga Rd., Abingdon, VA 24211. The memorial service will begin immediately following the military ceremony and will be conducted by Rev. Allen Jessee. The family will receive friends at the conclusion of the services.
