Abingdon VA - William J. “Bill” Singleton, age 92, passed away on Friday June 9, 2017 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Bill grew up in Dickenson County, Virginia, moving to Abingdon in 1963. In 1948, he married June Ball. He was a remarkable businessman, as illustrated by his distinguished career and the successful companies that he started. With his brother Bob, in 1957 he co-founded Singleton’s Discount Stores, Inc., a forerunner of today’s “big box” discount retailers. Following that 25-year venture, he established two additional companies with his sons: Single Stop, Inc., and Singleton Properties. Bill was an accomplished bluegrass musician and a U.S. Army WWII Veteran. He participated in the D-Day landing at Normandy and was a member of the 553rd Military Police Company.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents A.R. and Erie Sykes Singleton; his wife of 66 years, June; brothers Bob, Bill and Fred; sisters Thelma, Bernice, Nell and Betty. He is survived by his sons, Randy Singleton and wife Sue, and Dennis Singleton and wife Patricia, both of Abingdon; brother, Bobby J. Singleton; grandchildren, Susan Dye and husband Scottie, Stephanie Edwards and husband David, Lauren Singleton, and Dennis Singleton, Jr. and wife Amber; great grandchildren Colton, Philip, Noah, Audrey and Luna.
A funeral service will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday June 12, 2017 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Mark McFadden officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM at the funeral home prior to the service. Interment services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday June 13, 2017 at Mount Rose Cemetery; Glade Spring, VA, with David Edwards, Scottie Dye, Dennis Singleton, Jr., Colton Dye, Philip Edwards, and Noah Edwards serving as pallbearers. Military honors will be conducted by the Virginia Army National Guard. Those attending are asked to meet at the cemetery at least 15 minutes prior to the service.
