Abingdon, VA – William Lee Sutherland, age 93, passed on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, in Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, Tenn. Mr. Sutherland was born and raised in Clintwood, Va. and lived in St. Paul, Va. before moving to Abingdon in 1973. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and served in the European Theatre during WWII. Mr. Sutherland earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Tennessee and retired as an accountant from Pittston Coal Company after 35 years of service.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Simpson Holiday Sutherland and Pearl Rush Sutherland; wife, Virginia Leidig Sutherland; brothers, Jasper, Benjamin, and John Sutherland; and sisters, Josephine Carico, Catherine Gilbert, and Louise Sutherland.
Mr. Sutherland is survived by two daughters, Jane Sutherland Chinault of Lexington, S.C., and Mary C. Sutherland and husband Eric Estes of Mineral, Va.; brother, Fred Sutherland of Sandston, Va.; sister, Jane Lyon of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Jennifer Whitley and Jonathan Chinault; and three great-grandchildren, Aidan, Bryson, and Collins.
Visitation with the family will be held 12:30-1:30 p.m. Friday, October 13, 2017, at Abingdon United Methodist Church. The memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. with Dr. Robert Countiss officiating. Interment will follow at the Holston Conference Cemetery in Emory, Va. with military rites conducted by Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard.
