William Ralph "Bear" Widener, 58, of Glade Spring, Virginia , passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2012 in Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport , Tennessee . Bear fought a brave and courageous battle with multiple myeloma for nearly three years. He was a special son, brother, uncle and friend to each and every one who knew him.
Bear was preceded in death in death by his parents William G. "Bill" and Elizabeth E. Widener; sisters Angie K. Vanhoozer, Nancy Combs, and Janice Widener; and one brother Edward G. Widener.
The family would like to thank Dr. Swan and Dr. Davis, Cathy Hopkins and the nursing staff at the Cancer Center ; Dr. Bowman and the Surgical Associates of Marion, VA; and a special thank you to the nursing staff of Holston Valley Medical Center and to Susie Lauman.
He is survived by brothers: Michael "Mike" Widener of Glade Spring, VA; James Widener and wife Chandra, and Danny Widener and wife Alma, all of Saltville, VA; two sisters: Joyce Hawkins and Jennifer Widener, both of Chilhowie, VA; twelve nephews and nine nieces; close friends: Russ Howell, Billie Blount, Lloyd Anderson, and Stevie and Wanda Moore.
The funeral service for Bear Widener will be held at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2012, in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Wade Jackson officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Daniel Vanhoozer, Howie Hawkins , Israel Combs, Jeremy Combs, Matthew Combs, Garrett Widener, Joshua Widener, Albert Widener, Elijah Widener, Cameron Saltz and David Saltz.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service.
Bear Widener and his family are in the care of Farris Funeral Service and Crematory, 427 East Main Street , Abingdon , VA 24210 (276-623-2700).
